I can still remember the first time I laid eyes upon the magnificent George Sturges House looming high above the tony Los Angeles neighborhood, Brentwood Heights. Stumbling upon it unexpectedly, I was mesmerized by the one-story residence perched dramatically on its site. Though actually quite small once inside (1,200 square feet), the home is larger than life from the street with a massive, cantilevered balcony soaring over the hillside.
Tomorrow, the residence, along with several pieces of FLW-designed furniture from the house and an impressive pop art collection is set to hit the auction block in an estate sale conducted by Los Angeles Modern Auctions and Sotheby's. Proceeds of the house and collection will benefit the Bridges/Larson Foundation, founded by James Bridges and Jack Larson, to be used for charitable, scientific, literary, and educational purposes.
